Today we went to Montserrat, a mountaintop monastery near Barcelona.
Farah, one of my friends who spent her summer in Barcelona, recommended the place.
Outside the Train Station at Montserrat
On the cable car you have to take to get to Montserrat
The views were amazing - you really had to use your elbows if you wanted any window space!
Ahead of us in the cable car
Looking below from the cable car
We made it!
You could also take the train to Montserrat.
- how the hell does that train get up that steep hill?? -
A super hip couple who posed for me. Er, at least the woman did :)
We spent around 10 minutes trying to find the best place for lunch.
And we found it. Look at that view.
Yep, our scrappily made sandwiches tasted wayy better with that view.
The cafe building next to us
We met a super cool cat in Montserrat.
It must have lived up here his whole life.
He's a great model.
Every tourist on that terrace took at least one photo of him.
And a huge foodie.
Really, cat, the food ain't great.
We wanted to eat the second part of our lunch here, and right when we opened our sandwiches, the cat started loudly meowing to get a share of our lunch.
(if the video isn't working, it's a clip of the cat very effectively begging for food.)
I'm so small and the mountains are so big.
Another cat!
Nati modeling some posh sunglasses.
Goodbye hip cat. We'll leave you to it.
See that cross in the right side? It's actually huge in person!
On our way to the Basilica.
Teresa insists this is a sculpture by Gaudi, so it's a sculpture by Gaudi. Voila.
In front of the Basilica...
...and inside.
For 40 cents, you could light a candle in this hallway.
On our way back down...
Nati, Teresa, and I saw a sign for "Chocolate caliente y churros" for 3,50€ on our way back to the hostel. We actually walked all the way back to the hostel and then went back to the cafe because we couldn't resist. The churros were kind of disappointing though - oily and not sweet at all! They just sprinkled sugar next to it. Where's the cinnamon?? It was more like a you tiao, the Chinese breakfast fried dough food.
But the hot chocolate was amazing. Like LA Burdick's, but not as suffocatingly thick.
As you can see, Montserrat is beautiful!!
I wish we had more time to take the trail around the mountains but then my already tired feet would have thought otherwise.
